Where to Find Job Stability

Where to Find Job Stability The truth is, the old fashioned view of job stability is D.E.A.D. and it isnt coming back. Theres a new kind of stability and you own it! I dont want to sound like the alarmist, chicken little, and scream the sky is falling. Instead, my message is more like the parent who warns you not to run with a stick in your hand or youll poke your eye out. Dont panic, just be smart and do the right thing. In todays US News World Report post, I provide evidence that the hiring process is broken and spell out a clear and implementable solution for your career stability. Honestly, I dont think you are going to like my idea. It is bitter medicine to swallow, however, if you look at the alternativeswell, there just arent many. Power To The People Most of us deal with stress, fear and uncertainty on a daily basis. This stinks.  You should feel empowered and in control of your future. There is a solution, but it is going to require effort. And I get it. Not everyone is gung-ho about work and careers. A lot of us see our job as a means to an end. But what is that end?  You may be reading this and thinking, I just want to do my job and make money so I can finish that statement. Making A Living We all want and need enough money to survive.  As the song goes everybodys working for the weekend  When you end up working just so you can have money, chances are you want to spend that money on leisure activities. But who says you are entitled to leisure activities? Entitlement Im pretty sure free time and leisure were NOT included in the Declaration of Independence. It does include our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  Yes, leisure time and activities would make us happy. Some will always have it, others strive for it.  So, let me ask you again. Why is it that you feel entitled to have free time? Is that some of the same old fashioned thinking that has been stuck in our heads? Is it a quality of life that may no longer be achievable? Work Hard and Stay Hungry Steve Jobs commencement address at Stanford includes a reminder to stay hungry- not literally hungry, but mentally hungry and driven to want. I hope youll read my newest post on On Careers to learn what you can do to create stability. And let me know what you think!
